TOCOMEE: A topological, colored model of the Earth’s elevation

This dataset provides free, global, topological, coloured elevation information with a resolution of 30 arc seconds. It is available free of charge under the CC BY 4.0 licence.

TOCOMEE is merged from three well-known scientific datasets and is distributed in tiles covering 5x5 degrees of the Earth’s surface. Furthermore, the tiles are available in three levels of resolution. While the data files can easily be imported into common CAD and 3D modeling software, the dataset’s genuine purpose is to be used as a 3D basemap for service-based 3D visualisation, especially in the context of Spatial Data Infrastructures (utilising the Web Portrayal Service technology).

The liberal licence allows the usage of the data for all purposes, including commercial ones (just make sure to give proper credit to the author).

If you use it, feel encouraged to send a screenshot of your work (together with some describing lines) to mno@flatpolar.org and get a place in the hall of fame on this website!

This dataset is constantly improved and enhanced. It is the result of a purely private effort with no institutional funding whatsoever. If you use it, please consider donating to help keeping the development running.

GeoTriMesh, the library created for the generation of the TOCOMEE data, is Open Source and available on GitHub: https://github.com/flatpolar/geoTriMesh/ . It’s also available as a plugin for QGIS https://github.com/flatpolar/geoTriMeshQGIS/ .
